Poland contracts just 36% of offered renewable power in Dec auctions
The country's Energy Regulatory Office (URE) announced that the two successful auctions contracted over 16 TWh of electricity with a total value of around PLN 5.1 billion (USD 1.24bn/EUR 1.19bn), out of 44.6 TWh of total green energy allocated for sale in all seven auctions.
The dominant power source was solar photovoltaics (PV) with 198 winning bids out of 200 in total. The other two bids concerned wind farm installations.
As a result of the auction for PV and wind installations with a capacity greater than 1 MW, solar parks with a combined capacity of slightly over 1,481 MW and onshore wind farms of 90.8 MW may be built in the next years.
The auctions dedicated to hydroelectric power, agricultural biogas and installations for biomass and biogas other than agricultural, failed because of an insufficient number of bids, the regulator said.
The head of URE, Rafal Gawin, pointed out that the interest in this support mechanism remains at a level similar to those in 2022 and 2023. He emphasized the need to adjust the auction system to the realities of the renewable energy market so that it would enable more effective support for technologies other than PV.
